EISTEDDFOD

NORTH AMERICAN FESTIVAL OF WALES

Once again, it's time to enter the Eisteddfod of The North American Festival of Wales!  There are several opportunities to compete, for those attending NAFOW in Philadelphia (Aug. 31 – Sept. 4) or not, including: 

- POETRY COMPOSITION:  Welsh Language and English Language, both for Adults (age 18+) and Youth (ages 11-17), each with a $250 grand prize.  Entry deadline: JULY 22

- STAGE COMPETITIONS (Sat., Sept. 3 in Philadelphia):  Solo Voice / Semi-Professional (for the Welsh North America Prize and a $3500 scholarship to travel to compete in Wales next year); Hymn Singing; Welsh Language Recitation and English Language Recitation.  Entry deadlines: AUGUST 22 for singing competitions, no deadline for recitation competitions.

- VISUAL ARTS:  For popular viewing & voting in Philadelphia.  Entry deadline (for title/description):  AUGUST 22. 

 

- LIMERICK COMPOSITION:  Something new & fun for those attending in-person in Philadelphia… check it out when you get there!

Welsh Tract Day

THE WELSH TRACT TAVERN

An 18th century themed tavern with authentic 18th century Spruce Beer, water, iced tea, and Welsh snacks such as Bara Brith and Welsh cakes for sale. 18th century toys and games.

MARI LWYD PARADE

Yes, it's not New Years, but it is such a distinctive and unique Welsh folk tradition!

FORT TOURS

At 12:00 and 2:00

WELSH LANGUAGE

A 30 minute presentation with a lesson on Welsh language basics by Mathew Rhys

HISTORY

30 minute presentation of the history of the Welsh Tract and the Welsh in America by Connor Duffy

The Griffith Morgan House will be setting up a table with a small display on their site as well as Welsh History in general

LOVESPOONS

Small favor sized lovespoons imported from Wales will be for sale, with custom wood laser engraving available

KIDS ACTIVITIES

Welsh themed coloring pages for kids (and kids at heart!)

PORTRAITS

Kevin O’ Malley, an 18th Century sketch artist in costume, will be offering portraits to guests, who can dress up in 18th century clothing for them

ART

Keith Trievel, also an artist, will be selling painted slate work with Welsh themes

ABOUT US

With a strong and distinguished Welsh population, the Welsh Society of Philadelphia continued to meet and to assist needy Welsh immigrants throughout the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

More recently, the Welsh Society has led the way among Welsh-American organizations in cultural, philanthropic, and educational programs.

The prestigious Robert Morris Award is presented to a distinguished Welsh-American at the Society’s St. David’s Day banquet.

The Divine Service is held annually on a Sunday near St. David's Day in the St. David's Chapel of the Arch Street Presbyterian Church, 18th and Arch St, Philadelphia and is followed by a Te Bach
